Despite merchandising presence Valentine's Day sneaks up on men

"The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart" — Helen Keller.Despite the big displays of Valentine’s Day related merchandise in so many local stores, that Thursday is Valentine’s Day will no doubt catch many — mostly men — by surprise, and they’ll be rushing to one of those local stores on their way home from work Thursday, trying to make sure they cover their bases with their loved one.I checked a variety of websites looking for information about Valentine’s Day. .

Early tip: More pop from Yunel | Braves

Kelly said when he put his left arm over Escobar's shoulder, he noticed immediately how much bigger his back and shoulders were.

What does this mean? It means Bad News for the Toros.

OK, it's early and I'm only on my third cup of coffee. Don't even know why I thought of that line, but I did. Let the kids play. Let them play….

But anyway, what it means is, take Escobar in your fantasy league and pencil him in for 45 doubles and 12-15 homers.

I know, I know, he only totaled 46 doubles and 10 homers in 836 career at-bats in the minors. So what?

This is not the same player who struggled at times to adjust in the minors, who was uncomfortable at times, who had some attitude problems while adjusting to life in the U.S. and what was expected of him in the minors.

Dodgers' Schmidt shut down, at least temporarily

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Jason Schmidt, the Dodgers' rehabilitating right-hander who has been battling fatigue in his surgically repaired shoulder in recent days, has been told not to throw again until further notice.

Schmidt is expected to resume throwing in a few days, and although both manager Joe Torre and trainer Stan Conte said the development wasn't a cause for concern, they admitted that it effectively eliminates any chance of Schmidt being ready by the start of the regular season.

"I told him we want to proceed very slowly with him, and he doesn't get any extra points for being ready early," Torre said. "Early in the season, we can probably get by without a fifth starter, as opposed to trying to force something and running into trouble later on. I have not been warned (by Conte) that this is a problem.

Sulky Québec To Open Tonight

After much waiting and high anticipation, Attractions Hippiques' newly refurbished Sulky Quebec is ready to be officially unveiled in Quebec City.

The facilities have been fully transformed to offer horseracing fans cutting-edge technology, unequalled comfort and the opportunity to see these remarkable horses up close.

Sulky de Qubec, in which Attractions Hippiques has invested more than $23 million, features major innovations on all levels, as well as many improvements to customer service, primarily on race nights. The designers also wanted to bring spectators closer to the horses by creating an easily accessible mezzanine where they can watch activities in the paddock, and the grooming and care of the horses.

On the ground floor, visitors can now take advantage of an information zone, an ultramodern sports bar, open seven days a week, a dining room with view on the track, another dining room equipped with the latest technology to present races from around the world, La Verrire bar, as well as lounge areas and snack bars on each level.

Queen of the Tweens

Cyrus's main competition at the top of the Tween Idol food chain, 16-year-old Jamie Lynn Spears, recently took herself out of the running by getting pregnant. Her mother - bless her heart - reportedly managed to salvage the disaster by selling the story to a gossip magazine for seven figures.

On the bright side, it opens up all kinds of possibilities for the writers of Spears's TV show, Nickelodeon's Zoey 101, which is about a girl learning all about life while attending a co-ed boarding school in California where the kids are served sushi for lunch and apparently never go to class.

But, then again, dormitory hijinks don't really sound like Nickelodeon's standard, squeaky-clean world of middle-class, suburban kids with great wardrobes and bland, indulgent parents.

'TONY' Vid Proves Existence Of Happiest, Most Fulfilled Dog-Owning ...

I'm totally going to get serious here cuz I think about this a lot. I've been single most of my life. Except for a few two-month relationships and millions of one-night stands, I've been alone. And I feel less than. It sucks cuz since I've been three I've always had Disney Princess wedding fantasies and as I age I realize that's never going to come true. And I'm coming to grips with the idea that I'm going to spend my whole life alone: with my pugs and my girlfriends.

What sucks is that I've internalized society's idea that being single and non reproducing is wrong.

So when people are like, "I'm single and happy!!!" I take it with a grain of salt. I think the only women who really feel that way and say that are nuns of any stripe. Cuz the rest of us just have blasted 'hope' and that will destroy our soul.

The polio vaccine, AIDS, and their US-made viruses

When I was a teenager growing up in Brooklyn, my parents warned me every summer to stay away from public pools or taking any chances running under opened fire hydrants to cools us from the brick-and-tar baking heat. Their fear was the epidemic of polio that haunted the US -- 52,000 cases in 1952 alone. My parents worried that polio germs could be carried in the highly used and abused public waters.

Yet in April 1955, in my 17th year, lo and behold Dr. Jonas Salk, a funny looking guy from Pittsburgh, announced from the University of Michigan that he had developed a polio vaccine for distribution. Eureka. Thousands of families like mine flooded to the local doctors, clinics, and hospitals. It seemed all those rosaries my friends mothers and mine gave up to the Holy Mother paid off. But did they?

As William Carlsen reports in his SFGATE article Rogue virus in the vaccine: Salks vaccine was produced by actually growing live polio virus on kidney tissue from the Asian rhesus monkey.

Anheuser-Busch Employees Tout Environmental Messages

(CSRwire) ST. LOUIS, MO - November 15, 2007 - "As you can see, we're one of the largest recyclers of aluminum cans." Those words are spoken by Jeff Lopez, a recycling dock operator at Anheuser Busch's Fort Collins, Colo., brewery, in one of a series of new videos featuring employees discussing the company's efforts to preserve and protect the environment. These videos are now available on the company's redesigned environmental Web site, www.ourpledge.com, which launched today, America Recycles Day. Lopez is shown standing in front of a large mound of aluminum cans. He explains that Anheuser-Busch Recycling Corp. (A-BRC), the company's recycling subsidiary, recycles more than 27 billion cans a year, which is 25 percent more than the company packages at its breweries. He notes that these cans can be recycled and reused as almost anything.

Hayden likes ambitious guys

Hayden Panettiere has revealed what attracts her to a guy.

"I have to be with someone who is very driven," admits the Heroes star in the April issue of Seventeen.

"When they're not, it becomes difficult."

The 18-year-old, who plays self-healing cheerleader Claire Bennet in the hit TV show, is rumoured to be dating Heroes co-star Milo Ventimiglia (Peter Petrelli), although neither have confirmed the reports.

"I need to learn more about myself because I'm a little confused at the moment. And I don't think I could ever fully give myself to somebody until I do," she adds.

Despite her young years, Hayden seems to have worked out the secret to a successful relationship.

She says: "I've figured out that the healthiest relationship is where you each have your own life, but they meet at a nice point in the middle.
