| Date abuse among teens an 'epidemic'
One third of today's Texas teens suffer some kind of abuse in their romantic relationships. Half of all reported date rapes happened among teenagers and nearly half of adult sex offenders say they committed their first offense before the age of 18. "We actually have a prevention program where we go out into high schools and talk about healthy relationships, safe dating, because it is so prevalent," said Kelly Young of the Houston Area Women's Center. For our student journalist, finding a victim was easy. Convincing her to talk wasn't, but Madrid told her, "I would really appreciate it because you would be giving so many girls a voice because there are a lot of girls or boys that have been through that. But they won't say anything." The victim did speak up.

Two Dark Birds Fly Coast To Coast
Sounding perhaps something like Neil Young or the Byrds during their countrified period, Two Dark Birds is definitely not made for these times and it's constantly reflected as the album plays out. It's a pleasant enough album that's so melodic barbershop quartet's would be envious of the stuff Two Dark Birds have come up with here. Its sun drenched songs and lackadaisical attitude are it's biggest assets and they shine through each song on Two Dark Birds. The album does tend to wear a bit thin as it goes on and by the end it sort of loses some of its sunshine. It's not as though the songs are any worse, but the pacing just gets a bit boring by the time Two Dark Birds winds down. In the end, Two Dark Birds is an album that's been time shifted and transplanted from a different century and coast.
CAIRO-ALEX DESERT ROAD
This area is one of the hottest (and most expensive) mainly because of its prime location. Zamalek is a natural island in the Nile, housing most of the embassies in Cairo making it a very safe place to live. The turn-of-the-century architecture is one of Zamaleks biggest aesthetic draws, where grandiose villas from days gone by grace most street corners. Zamalek is known for its great eateries, many of which have been around for ages. It is also an art-lovers haven, with a slew of private and public galleries and cultural centers including the Cairo Opera House and El-Sawy Culture Center. Apartments range from LE 5,000 to LE 12,000 per square meter; Nile views cost from LE 3,000 to LE 6,000 per square meter. Renting a flat can cost $500 to $3,000 per month, but bargains are often available.
Japan PM defends embattled defence chief
Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda on Friday defended his embattled defence minister who gave his strongest hint yet that he could resign over his handling of a naval accident. The opposition is demanding the minister's departure after Japan's largest destroyer accidentally rammed a small fishing vessel 10 days ago, leaving two fishermen, a father and his adult son, missing at sea, causing public outrage. If Defence Minister Shigeru Ishiba does step down, it would be the first cabinet resignation since Fukuda took over in September. "I'm always ready for that possibility," Ishiba told reporters when asked whether he would resign. But Fukuda again stood by the minister, saying: "There is no one who knows the current situation at the defence ministry better than Mr Ishiba." "I want him to carry out the task of reforming the ministry," Fukuda said in parliament.

Bluffton boy gives his birthday donations to Heroes on Horseback
Logan held his party three days after his Feb. 6 birthday at the Double C Ranch near Ridgeland last month. He and about 20 friends celebrated by mingling amid a menagerie of goats, pigs, skunks, ostriches and a camel. But the only presents he got were donations to Heroes on Horseback, the nonprofit that allows disabled children and adults the chance to ride and care for horses. Each of the children brought a few bucks from their parents and a neighbor friend donated another $100. In the end, they had $350. Last Saturday, Logan and his family went to the .

But there is another equally important cause: the simple fact that young black men commit a disproportionate number of crimes, especially violent crimes, which cannot be attributed to judicial bias, racism or economic hardships. The rate at which blacks commit homicides is seven times that of whites. Why is this? Several incidents serendipitously occurring at around the same time as the march on Jena hint loudly at a possible answer. In New York City, the tabloids published sensational details of the bias suit brought by a black former executive for the Knicks, Anucha Browne Sanders, who claims that she was frequently called a "bitch" and a "ho" by the Knicks coach and president, Isiah Thomas. In a video deposition, Thomas said that while it is always wrong for a white man to verbally abuse a black woman in such terms, it was "not as much ...
NANCY VAUGHAN: Prudent judgments take time
I have been asked to consider new ways to do business and I have been asking others to do the same. All of this activity involves the delivery of human services and much of it involves public policy. You want activists? come and get them
The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is refusing to meet Japanese conditions for the release of Australian Benjamin Potts and Briton Giles Lane, who have been detained on board the Yushin Maru No. 2 after boarding the ship late on Tuesday. Glenn Inwood, spokesman for the Japanese whaling research authority, the Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR), said if the activists would not agree to the men's release on the ICR's terms it was up to the Australian Government to retrieve them. Failing that, the men would remain on the ship for the duration of the kill and be taken to Japan to face charges of piracy. Under the ICR's conditions for the men's release, the Sea Shepherd's ship the Steve Irwin must remain 10 nautical miles from the whaling vessel and the two detainees would be transferred to a Zodiac inflatable boat, he said.
