Deluxe singles travel

The same old images still adorn the walls and windows of your local travel office: Smiling nuclear families discovering Disney World and well-tanned, hand-clasped couples honeymooning on the white sand shores of a Caribbean paradise.

While families still go to Disney World and couples still honeymoon in the Bahamas, these images are increasingly anachronistic representations of the typical American traveler. Millions of people today travel with neither families nor mates, but alone—as unattached singles.

In the last decade, the number of single travelers has exploded to reach more than a quarter of the entire industry—a percentage that continues to rise along with divorce rates and the average marrying age. According to Connected: Solo Traveler's Network, a leading online singles travel community, one-third of the adult population is single and travels that way.

None, New Year’s resolutions are pointless

One was on the lead, but the other, off the lead, was hanging in the air from a tree branch by its jaws, bouncing up and down, while its owners, wearing hooded tops, stood by encouraging it. They then had one hell of a job getting it off the tree branch, and went on their way. I did not dare go out and confront them. It sounds as though these were the two dogs involved in the attack on Sunday. I obviously dare not now walk my dogs in the lane, especially in the dark, until the other loose dog is caught, or the owner identified. Hopefully the local dog wardens will patrol the area. Please keep us informed. Thanks. .

Green's proposed changes for ORU include power-sharing

In return for a $62 million donation, Oral Roberts University's board of regents will be asked to share power, the Tulsa World has learned.

Mart Green, a Yukon businessman whose family founded the Hobby Lobby chain of craft stores, released a statement to the World on Tuesday outlining his process for reform at the university.

Green is in Bethlehem in the West Bank, where his nonprofit film company is making a movie.

Green said his family plans to present a detailed proposal to ORU's regents in early 2008.

Green's family gave ORU an unconditional donation of $8 million last month and promised an additional $62 million if ORU accepts the proposal.

Green's statement says: "The proposal will focus on accepted twenty-first century shared governance principles.

Kenya meeting collapses

THE two men at the centre of Kenya's political crisis met face to face yesterday for the first time since a disputed election, but hopes for an end to four weeks of chaos and violence quickly dissolved into partisan backbiting.

Moments after the long-awaited meeting between opposition leader Raila Odinga and President Mwai Kibaki -- whose re-election many observers think was rigged -- Mr Kibaki delivered a short, defiant speech in which he called himself the "duly elected president of Kenya" and referred repeatedly to "my Government" while Mr Odinga stood by uncomfortably.

Mr Odinga's party called a news conference to denounce what it called Mr Kibaki's "demeaning and unacceptable behaviour".

Two days of work by the latest mediator to come to Kenya -- former UN secretary-general Kofi Annan -- withered in the Nairobi heat.

Rockland code office getting its coffee fix

He did not give a date for reconvening the committee.

Reilley also addressed in his letter the additional problem of chaff, a waxy membrane on the unroasted coffee bean that becomes airborne and emits fine particles from the stack during the roasting process.

He said he had changed the airflow and the roasting schedule and made a slight change in the procedure.

Reilley estimated the improvements would cost $5,000.

Rock City Coffee Roasters is one of the businesses credited with starting the revival of the city's downtown economy 16 years ago, said City Manager Tom Hall.

"We don't want to put a very important cornerstone business out of business," Hall said last month.

The company's South Main Street roastery, which has been roasting coffee at the site since 1999, and combination coffee shop and secondhand bookstore on Main Street employ 24 people.

Latest murder comes on the heels of a violent Carnival

The shooting and crash attracted dozens of neighborhood residents to the scene. Causey slumped at the wheel, bleeding from a single gunshot wound to the back.

New Orleans Emergency Medical Service workers said Causey was dead at the scene. The Orleans Parish coroner's office pulled Causey from the car and later released his identity.

About 80 minutes after the murder, Irish Channel residents reported a drive-by shooting in the 700 block of Washington Avenue. Residents told police the occupant of a passing car sprayed gunfire in the middle of the block. No one was injured.

Violent Carnival weekend

Causey's murder came after a violent weekend.

On Saturday afternoon, police found the body of Terry Robinson, 26, in a vacant lot near the corner of North Johnson and Montegut streets.

Heath, Mary-Kate: The truth about their relationship

CRUICAL details of how Mary-Kate Olsen and Heath Ledger became romantically attached have been revealed as the American actress becomes the cruical celebrity link to the mysterious riddle of his death.

Heath Ledger and Olsen are now believed to have been friendly for two years - a friendship they were able to key out of the public spotlight.

And it is being claimed that any sexual side - according to US reports - seems to have started in the past three months.

Gun control is only realistic answer

There are 15 states that have a crime rate worse than Illinois, so concealed weapons aren't the answer. U.S. citizens own over 233 million guns and almost 35,000 people are killed each year in the U.S. with guns.

I'm not interested in stopping people from owning guns, protecting themselves or hunting.

All I know is that on Feb. 2 and 14, a bunch of people died and they were shot by guns.

Banning guns outright may never completely eliminate the threat. However, it is far less likely that the "sick," "twisted" and "crazed" people will be outlawed, and until they are, I'm ready to explore every alternative.

Warriors forward Jackson makes big impression on third-graders

When Oakland third-grader Allysia Jones got a hug from Golden State Warriors forward Stephen Jackson at Tuesday's game, her gleeful reaction best sums up the atmosphere at an event organized to give some kids a one-of-a-kind experience.

"I'm never going to wash my shirt again!" she said in her little high- pitched voice.

Jackson and Southwest Airlines sponsored an essay contest in which 10 third-graders from Jackson's hometown of Port Arthur, Texas, won a trip to see the Warriors play the Sonics (winning 105-99, no less). The kids also got to mingle with schoolchildren from Oakland, such as Jones, who attends Ruby Bridges.

"I am very excited to welcome these kids from my beloved hometown of Port Arthur to my new home .
