THE office of the Prime Minister has admitted a member of Kevin Rudd's staff sent emails to disgraced West Australian lobbyist Brian Burke. It is understood that while he was Opposition foreign affairs spokesman, with an eye on the ALP leadership, Mr Rudd had email exchanges with Mr Burke about a possible meeting. The importance of the emails and their content relate to whether Mr Rudd has been totally candid about his relationship with Mr Burke. Sources in Western Australia have told The Sunday Telegraph they have seen the emails, dating back to 2005, and that they were aimed at getting Mr Burke to help lift Mr Rudd's profile inside the Labor Party - especially in WA. But Mr Rudd's office insists the emails relate only to the "logistics'' of a cancelled dinner, although the office has refused to reveal the number or the precise content of the messages in question.
Annexation meeting gets OK
Kane County Circuit Court Judge Michael Colwell ruled in favor of the village, saying a legislative body cannot be stopped from conducting business at a legally posted meeting. He also ruled that the annexation petitioner needed to be present – he was not – and the pending disconnection cannot stop a request for another annexation."The filing of a disconnection cannot paralyze and prevent municipalities from fulfilling their responsibilities to all citizens," village attorney Hal Morris said. "Disconnection is not a bar to annexation."Elliott said the village was selective in providing information to the public – first being cryptic in its special meeting notice, then refusing to release a copy of the Algus annexation petition until late Friday."When the village says it is fulfilling its responsibilities to its citizens, one must ask, ‘Which citizens are those?’ Clearly, the village is not referring to the Stroms, or to the hundreds of other residents who want to [disconnect from] the village and have been fought tooth and nail – with taxpayer money – every step of the way," Elliott said.
Campaign starts for Kokoda heritage listing
Kokoda Track Authority executive officer Warren Bartlett said the PNG Government would meet officials from the heritage department over the listing. But Nauro village locals support the bid of Australian miner Frontier Mining for an open cut mine because they say they are not seeing enough of the trekkers' fees the authority collects. They have blocked the track because they are frustrated the PNG Government, allegedly under pressure from Australia, has not granted Frontier Mining an extension to an exploration licence. Mr Bartlett said the track authority was trying to negotiate a compromise to get the track reopened. "They all want the mining to get a fair go, to co-exist with the trekking," he said. Frontier Mining officials were present when the Jack family clan felled a tree on their land to block the track, in front of local and Australian media.

I do not mean those in the senior grades, but those at the grass roots. If this is happening in our hospitals, what are the ward managers doing? How are nurses being supervised? Are they aware of their Code of Conduct? There are many who would decry nursing and nurses, but few make the effort to ensure that ward managers have the time to instill professionalism amongst their staff. The ward managers are too busy meeting senseless targets and number crunching, to be able to teach and lead. Professionalism also emanates from the leader. Celtics make statement with defense against Cavs
When the new-look Cavaliers visited the Celtics Wednesday night, the stage was set for one of those statement games. Plenty of statements were made, too, for both teams. The Celtics' defense makes the difference. The Celtics' lead over the Pistons was down to two before Wednesday's game and they have been losing ground to Detroit in the defensive rankings. The Pistons have taken over No. 1 in points allowed but the Celtics remain the leader in field-goal percentage allowed. They were in fine form Wednesday, limiting the Cavaliers to 38.3 percent shooting in the 92-87 victory. The key was holding down the Cavaliers' big guns, LeBron James (7 for 24) and sixth man Wally Szczerbiak (3 for 13). Don't call Ben Wallace over the hill yet. He's telling reporters that the system in Chicago didn't fit his strengths, and playing power forward for the Cavaliers will allow him to do a little more roaming and helping teammates on defense.

Police: woman reports being drugged, sexually assualted
A 21-year-old woman with no university affiliation told police she believes an acquaintance drugged her at a Lansing bar, took her to an unknown MSU residence hall and sexually assaulted her sometime between 4:15 and 8 a.m. Sunday, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. "We really haven't established a location of where it occurred, but she did indicate she thought it was a residence hall," McGlothian-Taylor said. The woman met the suspect early last week and agreed to meet him for drinks Saturday, McGlothian-Taylor said. "They initially met at an East Lansing bar, but the last bar they were at was at a Lansing location," McGlothian-Taylor said. The victim said her drink was drugged while at the Lansing bar. When the woman awoke Sunday morning, the suspect told her to get dressed and drove her back to her vehicle in an East Lansing parking ramp, McGlothian-Taylor said.
Time Team finds Bronze Age relics on Barra dunes
THE TRANQUIL Hebridean island of Barra became the scene of a mass excavation last month as Tony Robinson and his fellow Time Team diggers uncovered a Bronze Age cemetery arguably as impressive as Orkney's Skara Brae. More than 50 archaeologists and crew from the popular Channel 4 show were joined by local experts to dig up the Allasdale sand dunes, revealing burial kists with skeletons dating back almost 4000 years. During their three-day dig, the team also discovered whale, seal and sheep bones, a stone wheel house - so named as its internal walls resemble the spokes of a wheel - and two Iron Age round houses, with one considered the best preserved in the show's 11-year history of excavating relics. .

On Thursday night, when the news that Prince Harry had been serving in Afghanistan for 10 weeks leaked, I turned on Channel 4 News, presented by Jon Snow. Although Snow is someone with a strong, Left-wing political agenda that intrudes too much into his programme, I have always admired him. He is articulate and well-informed and he manages to treat issues thoroughly without making them boring. But what he said about the Prince Harry story was really shocking. Snow was furious at the media conspiracy (as he saw it) to conceal the fact that the Prince was in the front line. Using the oldest and falsest royal chestnut, he accused the editors who had made the agreement of seeking knighthoods. He must know that, except for a few restricted orders in the Queen's personal gift, honours come from a system controlled by the Prime Minister.
