Cyber love lost in Russian bride scam

An online Russian dating scam that Canadian police say has organized crime roots has bilked men of thousands of dollars.

Several men report being duped into sending romantic gifts and money to men posing as Russian brides on internet dating sites.

According to an investigation by Radio-Canada's La Facture program, the number of incidents involving Canadian men is on the rise.

Francis, 29, is a Quebecer who said he was scammed after falling in love with a blond Russian named Irina Gorachkina, whom he found on a dating website.

He said they started out exchanging neutral, friendly e-mails. "At first we talked about what we were like," he told Radio-Canada. "I told her I liked the outdoors, walking in the woods."

Francis's e-mail correspondence with Irina grew intimate and after weeks passed was filled with declarations of love such as, "I need you like a fish needs water, like a bird needs wings.

Youths support alco-pop measure

Chanting slogans and carrying signs, a group of students from around the state sought support Wednesday for legislation that would move so-called "alcohol-pops" to state liquor stores shelves.

"They display them in a way that makes it look like it isn't alcohol, " said Megan Urbanik, a student at Pinnacle Canyon High School in Price. Urbanik said she believed it was wrong to sell the flavored malt beverages in stores where minors can shop.

She was one of about 90 other members of the Governing Youth Council of Utah at the Capitol for the rally, a group committed to encouraging students to stay free from alcohol, tobacco and drugs and live a healthy lifestyle.

Liz Ferguson, a prevention specialist from Price who accompanied the students, said the group chose the legislation they wanted to support.

Antioxidant Pills Don't Cut Cancer Risk

Jan. 24, 2008 -- With one possible exception, many antioxidants in pill form do not appear to protect against cancer, according to pooled data from some of the most rigorous studies ever to examine the issue.

There was some evidence linking the mineral selenium to a reduced risk of cancer in men, but not in women. But the findings are not yet conclusive enough to recommend that men take selenium supplements, says Mayo Clinic physician Aditya Bardia, MD, MPH.

Bardia and colleagues combined 12 clinical trials including more than 100,000 participants for their systematic analysis, which appears in the January issue of the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

Among their other major conclusions:

As previously reported, beta-carotene supplementation was found to be associated with an increased risk of cancer in smokers and a trend toward increased death rate from cancer.

The Receding Hemlines of Crown Heights

Returning to the Chabad headquarters in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, for a Shabbos is an exhilarating experience. Lubavitchers are arguably the most alive people in the world, and there is a pulse and electricity in the air that can scarcely be found anywhere else. What I did not expect, however, was to be approached by a large number of young rabbinical students (bochurim) of marriageable age who wanted counseling as to how to overcome their obsession with a woman's looks on dates. Some of the bochurim who approached me had dated upwards of 40 women and had been instantly dismissive if she wasn't a beauty. Mind you, these were not bums. Most were outstanding young scholars, deeply religious, serious about their rabbinical degrees, and desirous of going out--right after marriage--to the far corners of the world to spread Judaism.

Online Prostitutes Arrested In Williamson County

Women selling sex on Craigslist in Central Texas are on the radar in Williamson County, where undercover detectives have already made several arrests.

Williamson County deputies said their sting began after a 17-year-old boy contacted an alleged prostitute from an ad on Craigslist. Craigslist is a popular community-based website launched in San Francisco that now has local community websites across the country. The site is used to by individuals to barter and sell goods and services. It also has an active job posting section.

Investigators don't know what happened between the teenager and the prostitute. What they do know is the next day, two of the woman's associates came to the home to collect money. The teenager called police to report a burglary in progress.

Let the final credits roll

Grange Hill, which brought a new kind of writing and acting to children's TV, began as the kind of show that newspapers should - and did - campaign to have banned, appalled by the realistic depiction of the sexual and narcotic appetites of schoolchildren. This accuracy, however, stopped short of their language: the strict BBC tongue police kept "flippin' heck" as the most severe expletive. But a programme that otherwise displayed such radicalism certainly should not end up being ranked - alongside pounds, miles, spats and sausages - as something a tabloid is nostalgically campaigning to conserve.

So high credit should be paid to the show's creator, Phil Redmond, who has the unique distinction in British television of creating two dramas - the other being Brookside - that lasted for at least two decades.
