When Dating Turns Violent

One in five teens in a serious relationship report being hit, slapped or pushed (2).

Fifteen percent have suffered severe forms of violence, including being hit, thrown down or attacked with a weapon in the past year (1).

Young teens should be protected from such crimes, but, like many adults, they often live with this problem in silence. In fact, they may not realize they are victims of a crime. They may be embarrassed or confused. They may receive threats from the person. Perhaps they are afraid of telling their parents.

Reasons as to why they stay in the relationship range from having an emotional attachment, to being fearful of leaving, to suffering low self-esteem, to succumbing to social pressures to be in a relationship.

Violence in teen dating relationships can occur sporadically or more frequently, like on a daily basis.

Weston hike explores human activity

The New Canaan Nature Center has scheduled a hike in Devil's Den in Weston for Saturday, March 8. Participants will search for signs of human activity dating back thousands of years. Volunteer guide Al Noe of Weston will lead hikers through the natural beauty of The Den to see evidence of the semi-nomadic Native Americans who once called the area home. The hike features a 3.3-mile hike that includes a vista from Deer Knoll, examination of the mechanical remains of a portable sawmill, a Native American shelter site, Godfrey Pond and the ruins of a water powered sawmill, and a charcoal-making site. Depending on the amount of interest at each site, this moderate hike should be completed in two to two-and-a-half hours. Mr. Noe has been leading hikes for adults and school groups at Devil's Den for more than six years.

Date abuse among teens an 'epidemic'

One third of today's Texas teens suffer some kind of abuse in their romantic relationships. Half of all reported date rapes happened among teenagers and nearly half of adult sex offenders say they committed their first offense before the age of 18.

"We actually have a prevention program where we go out into high schools and talk about healthy relationships, safe dating, because it is so prevalent," said Kelly Young of the Houston Area Women's Center.

For our student journalist, finding a victim was easy. Convincing her to talk wasn't, but Madrid told her, "I would really appreciate it because you would be giving so many girls a voice because there are a lot of girls or boys that have been through that. But they won't say anything."

The victim did speak up.

AOL Personals – Zogby Poll Probes American Views on Love and ...

Dulles, Va. and Utica, New York. More than 4 in 10 Americans (44%), including 50% in their 20s dont believe that they need to be married to validate the commitment of a long-term relationship, according to a survey from AOL Personals (http://personals.aol.com) and Zogby*. This is just one of the many findings from a new interactive survey of Americans age 20 to 69 that tackles how different generations view a wide range of relationship issues from love to soul mates, money and trust.

While many dont believe marriage is the ultimate symbol of commitment, there are significant differences among older and younger adults regarding how they view dating while nearly half of Americans said they would date someone who is not interested in a long-term relationship, older adults tend to be more open to dating without fixating on how long a relationship might last.

Sinatra style dropped in favor of ad-attracting oldies

Aiming to snare a younger demographic, WNMX-FM (106.1) abruptly changed formats Tuesday, moving from adult standards like Tony Bennett to the "oldies" music of the '60s and '70s.

"It's a younger first cousin to what we were doing," said Tom Gentry, general manager.

In making the change, WNMX fills a void left when Clear Channel radio pulled the plug on WWMG-FM ("Magic") in September 2004 and replaced it with the rhythmic-pop WIBT-FM ("The Beat" 96.1).

Ken Conrad will continue to host the station's morning show. There were no staff changes because of the format change, Gentry said.

WNMX had used the standards format for a decade, blending top artists dating to the Eisenhower era that included Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra.

Gentry said the new format -- with the bulk of the music drawn from the glory days of the baby boomer era -- would likely be more attractive to advertisers, luring an audience about 10 to 12 years younger.

Condo developers seek bankruptcy protection

I think that's why people are being patient is because they perceive they have several hundred thousand dollars in equity," he said.

Las Vegas has seen a number of luxury condo projects preselling and taking deposits without ever starting construction. New projects that started construction are running into problems, including Mira Villa and Cosmopolitan, Murphy said. Spanish View Towers halted construction and is now mired in litigation.

"We're seeing more and more auctions. I think it's just a sign of the troubled times we're in," Murphy said.

Terrin Griffiths, an economist and industry analyst for California Credit Union League, said part of the problem with condo projects in Las Vegas is that they're being built during a time of elevated inventory of homes for sale.

PM wants university headscarf ban lifted asap

TURKISH Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he wants a ban on the Islamic headscarf in universities abolished "as soon as possible" despite harsh objections from secularists, Anatolia news agency reported.

"We want this issue to be resolved as soon as possible within the democratic parliamentarian order... It is time for this problem to come to an end," Mr Erdogan told a gathering of his Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Istanbul, Anatolia reported.

The AKP reached a preliminary deal with an opposition party on Thursday on a constitutional amendment to lift the ban, despite severe criticism from the judiciary and members of the academic community.

The AKP, the offshoot of a now-banned Islamist party, has long opposed the ban, arguing that it violates both the freedom of conscience and the right to education.
