Cubans watching closely US presidential race

Quiz Cubans on their new president and you're as likely to hear about Hillary Rodham Clinton, John McCain and Barack Obama as Raul Castro.

Many believe any changes the next American administration makes to its Cuba policy will be more important to their happiness than any reforms the island's first new head of state in 49 years may embrace.

A 32-year-old named Pepe was sipping straight rum from a small plastic cup on a bench near Havana's Central Park when asked about his country's new government.

"What about a new U.S. president?" he responded. "Do you really think Obama can win? Will he get rid of the blockade?" he wondered, referring to the U.S. trade embargo on the island.

Seated nearby, his pal predicted that undercurrents of racism and sexism would push McCain to victory in the November election.

Out of control

The price of steel reached LE4,800 per tonne on 4 January, compared to LE3,700 in November 2007. Cement prices rose from LE330 to LE420 per tonne during the same period, while brick prices increased by 52 per cent in January, registering LE280 compared to LE180 per thousand brick in December 2007.

The surges in costs of these essential building blocks of the construction industry have directly impacted consumer housing unit prices.

Steel prices began to rise steadily at the start of 2008 with weekly price hikes. On 12 January, Ezz Steel company, whose output accounts for 60 per cent of the total local market production, announced that the increase in steel prices was due to the unprecedented increase in the cost of pellets, the raw material used in manufacturing steel.

What's a Kabbalah Wedding?

Rumors are flying that actors Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher will tie the knot in a "kabbalah ceremony" as part of their mysticism-themed pilgrimage to Tel Aviv next week in honor of the Jewish new year. But what would a kabbalah wedding ceremony be like?

Here's what we know for sure. Though Kabbalistic customs, practices, and beliefs have influenced traditional Judaism over the centuries, Kabbalah is not a "faith," or even a "cult religion," no matter what the gossip columnists might write. Though Kabbalists wrote many Jewish prayers and hymns, there is no specifically Kabbalistic liturgy.

Kabbalah (the Hebrew word for "tradition" or "received") refers to a body of esoteric, mystical Jewish teachings that flowered in medieval Provence and Germany, but whose roots extend back to Biblical times, and which continues to evolve--in a staggering variety of manifestations--today.

LOVE TIES PRINCESS TO BRITAIN

And far from discouraging their daughter from altering her plans, Prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah could not be more pleased about her increasing bond with Clark, 26, who is a St Andrews University friend of Prince William.

Indeed, the Duchess of York invited David to join her, Beatrice and Eugenie skiing in Verbier, where they are staying at the luxurious chalet of Fergies old boyfriend, motor-racing multi-millionaire Paddy McNally.

Its now Beatrices view that she has already done quite enough travelling after leaving St Georges School in Ascot last summer she went to Brazil and to Argentina, where she stayed on the ranch inherited by the Duchess of York from her late mother Susan Barrantes.

She popped back to the UK to appear in Martin Scorseses film about her ancestor Queen Victoria, and then again for the Queens diamond wedding celebrations.

Macy Slams Lohan for Lateness

Veteran actor William H. Macy has blasted co-star Lindsay Lohan for her behavior while filming the movie "Bobby," insisting she "should have her ass kicked."

The star shared scenes with the 20-year-old actress in the film and admires her talent, but not her manners.

He said, "You can't show up late. It's very, very disrespectful."

Lohan was blasted in a letter last month from the CEO of Morgan Creek Productions for her absences on set of her new film "Georgia Rule," who called her behavior that of "a spoiled child."

Lohan appears in the film alongside Macy's wife, "Desperate Housewives" star Felicity Huffman.

He explains, "I think what an actor has to realize (is that) when you show up an hour late, 150 people have been scrambling to cover for you.

Coke susbidiary SPC Ardmona cuts 50 jobs

COCA Cola Amatil subsidiary SPC Ardmona has cut 50 staff from its permanent workforce, citing drought and increasing import volumes of processed fruit and vegetables.

SPC said the restructure resulted in both redundancies and a number of vacant positions not being filled.

"We regret having to take this step,'' managing director Nigel Garrard said.

"We have been dealing with the effects of this drought and the competition from imported products for some time, and have managed to keep the business profitable and our growth plans on track.''

"However, to remain competitive, we have had to make the hard decision to take further costs out of the business and restructure our operations.''

Mr Garrard said the cost of the restructuring would be covered by operational and other cost savings across SPC and the wider Coca Cola Amatil group.
