Deluxe singles travel

The same old images still adorn the walls and windows of your local travel office: Smiling nuclear families discovering Disney World and well-tanned, hand-clasped couples honeymooning on the white sand shores of a Caribbean paradise.

While families still go to Disney World and couples still honeymoon in the Bahamas, these images are increasingly anachronistic representations of the typical American traveler. Millions of people today travel with neither families nor mates, but alone—as unattached singles.

In the last decade, the number of single travelers has exploded to reach more than a quarter of the entire industry—a percentage that continues to rise along with divorce rates and the average marrying age. According to Connected: Solo Traveler's Network, a leading online singles travel community, one-third of the adult population is single and travels that way.

Human Resource Professionals Respond To Flu Season

You sound terrible. Go home." A new survey about flu in the workplace shows that 33 percent of organizations send employees home if they come to work sick. Just over one in 10 offer telecommuting options for workers who are ill but ask to work from home.

The 2008 Flu Prevention in the Workplace Survey from the Society for Human Resource Management provides a snapshot of how human resource professionals are responding to the flu season.

While most of them (59 percent) say their companies offer free flu vaccine to employees, other options are reported. Eighteen percent of companies encourage employees to get a flu shot offsite and 10 percent will pay for it. Nineteen percent offer shots onsite, but at employees' expense. Three percent do the same, but subsidize part of the cost.

The Wanderer: Don’t toss it all out

Bush elicits the same sorts of violent emotions for a lot of Americans, especially Democrats — they'd love to unleash a fire extinguisher on him, they don't care about the residual damage and their relationship with him is (almost) over.

But is there anything worth saving? I'm worried that the virulent anti-Bush groups, and even moderates who are just tired of him, would say everything connected with Bush should just be tossed out.

It is no coincidence that every primary campaign has gravitated to themes of hope and change. That is what resonates. On both sides of the political spectrum, people want to get past the Bush administration and all of its negative associations. Tear-off calendars that count down the days until it's over have sold like crazy.

In typical lame duck fashion, Bush has decided that now is a fine time to go on a goodwill tour in Africa — this is what presidents do when they're worried about their legacy, and on that front, things don't look too good.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Thanksgiving, Thankstaking, Charlie Brown..and Rumors!

I know many of you couldn't (and perhaps shouldn't) care less about this. However! This is a history football game set to take place in the First State of Delaware between two schools that have never played each other. Now, there are a few reasons that this is significant! Delaware State is a historically Black college and UD is what one will call a “majority" school. Now, why these teams have never played is a MYSTERY. Some charge pure racism (Click here to read an ESPN story on the race allegations) and others say that Del State isn't big enough…Anyway, on Friday, they play for the first time EVER!

The whole DE is crazy over this game. AHH's founders Grouchy Greg and Jigsaw are going to be there, I heard. Now, that means AllHipHop is in the building.

SEASON RECAP: Depleted Crimson No Match for Ivy’s Best

The Harvard women's tennis team's spring season began with only a single returning player, but ended with a satisfying win over Dartmouth and a tantalizing promise of a bright future for the program.

While this year's team did not enjoy the success of last year's Ivy League championship squad, the Crimson overcame a depleted roster and a plethora of injuries to end the season on a high note.

“We had a fantastic season and I feel like the team did a great job," said senior captain Preethi Mukundan, the only carryover from last year's team. “Obviously, we had a lot of challenges, but everything came together amazingly well. We have a lot of ability to do some great things next year."

This winter, the team found itself so short-handed it needed to find extra players merely to field a complete squad.

Ferrell taking timeout from sports movies

Colleagues noticed. "I thought, 'I don't want to be Dan Rather, I want to be Chevy Chase,' " he said.

The career decision has worked out reasonably well, but he never stopped being a fan. He often attends USC football games and tries to catch the Dodgers or Lakers. His celebrity makes it complicated.

"I'm on that sideline at SC games, and it's always amazing, it can be like fourth-and-inches, the game is on the line and someone is like, 'Can I get your picture real quick?' " he said. "I'm like, 'You know, can we wait until a timeout?' "

Ferrell is not quite old enough to have been a fan of the ABA, so he has no emotional connection to it -- unlike director Kent Alterman, whose family had Spurs season tickets and at one game early in their NBA days was so obnoxious he provoked the Celtics' Dave Cowens to come after him.

Farmers must fill out thick ag census packet

It's the 2007 Census of Agriculture, coming soon to mailboxes on rural routes all over Iowa and the other 49 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Dating to 1790, the ag census is a government effort to take the pulse of agriculture every five years.

Thick packets of census forms, looking a bit like tax booklets, were mailed Friday. The government isn't asking for the information; farmers are required by law to return their census forms by Feb. 4.

Bush Speech To Offer Few New Ideas

There were about 15 people in America who supported him," said Peter Wehner, a former Bush adviser who is a senior fellow at The Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington. "Now there's an overwhelming consensus that that's been successful. So he's got a story to tell there."

This speech, however, will not be a retrospective on the seven years of Mr. Bush's presidency. He is no fan of looking back.

His mission is to chart a course for what's left and remind people that, yes, he's still here and engaged. He was written off as a lame duck last year but then used his veto authority with great success, staying relevant and forcing changes in legislation.

Inside the White House, Mr. Bush's advisers know the obstacles.

The legislative calendar is considered even shorter this election year.

Wedge says five are battling for utility spot

With all players in camp (except visa-challenged Jorge Julio), today will be the first full-squad workout of the spring.

Wedge and General Manager Mark Shapiro met with each position player Wednesday.

''Everything went well,'' Wedge said. ''We wanted to make sure everyone is on the same page and tell them what we expect of them. I look forward to seeing everyone out there tomorrow. It's time to get it going.''

Wedge will address the entire team today.

Sheldon Ocker can be reached at socker@thebeaconjournal.com.

Nothing can beat donation of body

That means influencing mainstream Indian opinion. The status quo may not be to the liking of the Hurriyat but it should realise that it cannot move forward without reconciliation with Jammu and Ladakh. Were it to do so, its credentials would be more acceptable than today. It is a pity that the Hurriyat is going over the same exercise again and again. It should have learnt some lessons by now.
