| Newcomer's charm fuels 'Bartlett'
Here's a name to remember: Anton Yelchin. OK, no one said it would be easy to remember. But make a mark of it: This kid's going to be around for a long time. He's got charisma, cool and cocky likability to spare. In fact, it seems somehow fitting to find him on the verge of breaking out with "Charlie Bartlett," a movie that co-stars Robert Downey Jr., about whom the exact same things could have been said 20 years ago. .
NATURE'S ASSASSIN
I had come, not to Africa, but to Central America, as a freelance correspondent on assignment, spending months living with guerrilla fighters and refugees in the steamy hot, mountainous forests of Nicaragua and El Salvador. At some point during that time, the anopheles mosquito did its work. Like most victims, I was probably bitten at night, the insect injecting me with the one-celled plasmodia parasite when I was sleeping deeply after yet another long, exhausting day in the sweltering bush. Scientists say that as many as 50,000 plasmodia could swim in a pool the size of a full stop. But it takes only one to enter the bloodstream and make its way to the host's liver, where it multiplies and infects the red-blood cells, to trigger malaria. Four species of plasmodia normally infect humans, and by far the most dangerous is Plasmodium falciparum.
Standing Against Torture
Every member of Congress should stand up and vote to overturn his defiance of American values. White House officials insist a ban on waterboarding would force the CIA to shut down its program of enhanced interrogation of terror suspects. When pressed to defend the president's position, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino didn't try to parse the definition of torture - how could she? Gen. Michael V. Hayden, director of the CIA, and Michael McConnell, director of national intelligence, have said they believe waterboarding is torture. Instead, she relied on partisan sniping: "Americans will have to ask themselves, 'Do you trust the intelligence community more than you trust Democrats who are beholden to their left wing?'" Sen. John McCain, who was tortured in Vietnam, said he voted against last week's bill because Congress had passed an effective ban on torture in the 2006 Detainee Treatment Act.

Baxter last month announced the voluntary recall of nine lots of multi-dose vials after learning of adverse events in dialysis patients, but the details of the outbreak were not disclosed until the CDC released the information. Doctor Alex Kallen , part of the CDC team looking into the illness, said the heparin has been tested for bacteria and endotoxin, but neither was found. Kidney patients receive heparin to prevent clotting of blood during the dialysis process. CDC officials said allergic-type reactions occurred within minutes of starting dialysis. The symptoms included facial swelling, nausea, rapid heart beat and decreased blood pressure. Baxter officials said when announcing the recall that some of these reactions may be severe or life threatening.
'Blinding Snow' Causes Massive 68-Car Pileup in Pa.; 1 Killed, 35 ...
HAZLETON, Pa. Windy, bitterly cold weather spread from the northern Plains to the Northeast on Sunday, with blinding snow canceling church services in parts of Michigan and causing a 68-vehicle pileup in Pennsylvania. A woman died in the Pennsylvania pileup when her car became wedged underneath a tractor-trailer, said Lt. Jason Zoshak of Hazleton Township Fire and Rescue. About 35 people were injured, and at least 24 people whose cars were not drivable were taken to shelters, he said. Firefighters used ropes to rescue people who had scrambled out of their cars and jumped down an embankment to avoid being hit. "They had a heavy snow squall going through the area, zero visibility, high winds," Zoshak said. "There were vehicles everywhere." Also in Pennsylvania, a 60-foot tree toppled by high winds fell onto a sport utility vehicle traveling along a Berks County road, killing a 48-year-old man and critically injuring his 49-year-old wife, state police said.

The priest was brought back to work in the Providence diocese (see more under that listing). More recently, Bishop Angell allowed six accused priests to stay on the job in Vermont, then later gave their names to the state attorney general and suspended them. He would not identify them publicly. .

Cher's Witchy Beauty Confession
Cher was on hand at last nights Grammy Awards to introduce good friend Tina Turner's performance with Beyonce. Backstage the ageless diva opened up on her beauty regimen, joking "I'm a witch! I sold my soul to the devil. I have a portrait of Dorian Grey in my cupboard. I don't know what it is." She also spoke out on a more serious topic, good friend Farrah Fawcett's cancer battle, saying "She is one tough girl, I couldn't have gone through what she has." .
Enigma behind U.S. Kosovo Policy
Russian Patriarch Alexy II expressing profound concern that Kosovo independence can lead to new tragedies stated: Today, the Kosovan future is resolved by people who have never been to Kosovo, who do not know how sacred this land is for the Serbian people. Think of one Kosovan field, soaked with the blood of our sisters and brethren. The U.S. Balkans policies have been mind-boggling and enigma to many. The Bush administration is getting ready to leap into unknown again. Lack of foresight is viewed as a leading cause of its Iraq debacle. What motivates the U.S. and its allies is less than transparent and defies common-sense. A citizen of the 21st century world expects the Western leaders to offer genuine moral judgments, sound logic and thorough assessment of possible consequences of their decisions.
The new yogurt culture
The common thread is that unlike the artificial, sugary frozen yogurt that was popular in the 1980s and '90s, this version tastes remarkably like tart, plain yogurt. And while a few shops offer other flavors like chocolate or green tea, most opt for the plain and add toppings like fresh fruit or granola. "It's seriously addicting," says 26-year-old Lena Hubrig, in line one recent afternoon at Yogurt Bar. "The first time I tried it, I was totally unprepared for the tang, and I couldn't decide if I actually liked it. Then about five minutes went by, and I realized my spoon was scraping the bottom of the cup. Uhhh, guess I liked it." Hardly a day goes by now that Hubrig doesn't need her fix. "I consider it a healthier option than the afternoon snacks I used to eat, like chips or cookies, so I feel virtuous when I eat it." .
Serbs torch border posts in northern Kosovo
They were on big fat chairs sitting during all other nations there working for them. Why should i work for you? Why went Slovens, than Croats, Bosnia, Macedonia, even your twin brother Montenegro went! Why shoud Kosova stay?Because of mines over there? This is only a process of desintegration of a big evil State. You have still a big propaganda programe against all your "enemies". It will be much better, everyone works for himself. Therefore this had nothing to do with other Countries or minorities. This is only the last part falling from a mosaique called YU. Live in peace! .

He reluctantly agrees to tell her, on the condition that this bedtime story will have the names changed, so she will have to guess which "character" Mommy turned out to be. Thus we roll back to 1992, when Bill leaves perfect college sweetheart Emily (Elizabeth Banks) for two months to work on Bill Clinton's first presidential campaign in Manhattan. She's not happy about the separation, but he assures her their relationship can weather the break. That proves trickier than expected, however, in part because he soon makes friends with two very different but equally attractive women: Emily's erstwhile freshman roommate Summer (Rachel Weisz), a driven aspiring journalist currently shacking up with a famous political analyst (Kevin Kline); and April (Isla Fisher), a defiantly apolitical, somewhat rudderless free spirit who works at the campaign headquarters for cash rather than cause.
